The challenge
IDEAS xLab is an artist-run organization based in Louisville and working nationally that champions inclusion and belonging through creativity, art, and action. IDEAS xLab was named Nonprofit of the Year by the Derby Diversity & Business Summit in 2019, and its HEAL Community Approach was recognized as an international good practice by UCLG Culture 21.
What we did
- 01Provided strategic counsel on The (un)Known Project, the work-of-art-and-history collaboration with the Frazier History Museum and Roots 101
- 02Supported partnerships with Louisville Metro Government departments
- 03Helped position the HEAL Community Approach for international recognition
- 04Built fundraising scaffolding for limestone benches, poetry, photography, and arts-based experiences along the Ohio River

The (un)Known Project, created by Hannah Drake and Josh Miller, is now a featured work of art and history, its location designated a monumental site and symbol of African American history.
